I had to BUY, physically BUY, Super Mario Bros on DVD for this review. If that doesn’t say the lengths at which I will go for this podcast, I don’t know what does. This film is an absolute anomaly. How it got made, how it exists in this universe, all of it escapes me. It’s a movie I truly didn’t even know existed until it was kindly recommended to me on Twitter, and WOW I’m so glad it was. Not only is Super Mario Bros a hidden gem from the bowels of ‘93, but it’s also an iconic film that deserves to be regarded as an all time cult classic. The world building and logic at work in this is nothing short of inspiring. Not in the sense that it’s ‘good’ necessarily...but certainly in the sense that it’s shockingly entertaining. This film belongs on streaming services. We need everyone to know that Super Mario Bros exists and you can actually see Dennis Hopper with a lizard tongue.
